Roles
Facility, administrator, coach, athlete, and Race Practice Owner — who does what.
Who runs CCB
CCB has a small set of named roles. The terminology is deliberate and standardized — the words below are what you see on every CCB surface.

The roles below are the public-facing terminology. Internal system identifiers for these concepts are out of scope for this page.
Facility
A facility is the customer's gym. It is the multi-tenant boundary — every Session and every coach account lives at exactly one facility. Coaches at one facility cannot see or affect Sessions at another.
A facility runs CCB sessions under its own name. It provides the floor, the equipment, the staff, and the schedule.
The word facility is canonical. The narrower entity names ("CrossFit box", "CrossFit-style box", "CrossFit affiliate") describe the subgenre of facility; they name the specific kind of gym, not the customer's gym in general.
Administrator
An administrator is the first authorized coach at a facility. The administrator:
- Sets up the facility and invites other coaches.
- Has full Session authority.
- Can revoke coach accounts and reassign roles within the facility.
There is no global administrator role. The administrator is always scoped to one facility.
When a coach creates a new facility by signing up, that coach becomes the administrator. The canonical public term is "administrator" — the word on every visible surface.
Coach
A coach is the human who runs a Session at a specific facility. The coach:
- Starts and ends Sessions.
- Drives the Session flow: Preparation, Work Phase transitions, Session controls.
- Applies coach-initiated session controls for safety or override.
A coach may not invite other coaches or manage the facility. Those are administrator-level actions.
Every coach action is authorized against the coach's facility. Coaches at one facility cannot affect a Session at another.
Athlete
An athlete is a person participating in a Session. An athlete:
- Owns their own device.
- Joins a Session by scanning the Session QR code.
- Confirms their own result at the Freeze.
- Signals their own Burden completion.
By default, an athlete does not need an account. They join an active Session by scanning the code the coach displays. If an athlete signs in later, they can claim past Session records.
The coach's view of the athlete is the per-station breakdown. The athlete's view is the room's experience.
Race Practice Owner
A Race Practice Owner is the athlete who controls a Race Practice Session. In Race Practice:
- One athlete starts the practice.
- That athlete drives the lifecycle in place of a coach.
- The athlete cannot edit another athlete's result, override Evaluation, cancel a rule-generated Burden, or declare a team total.
When Race Practice ships, it will be a Solo format first. Duo and Trio Race Practice (where the team total is server-derived from individual inputs) are planned expansions of the format. Until those ship, a Race Practice is one athlete running the entire Session flow on their own device.
The owner is responsible for the Session lifecycle; the platform is responsible for the Evaluation and Burdens.
Judge, when relevant
A Judge is the official who verifies outcomes in Competition. Judging is a Competition-tier role. In a Group Session, there is no Judge — the coach and the platform enforce the rules together. In Competition, a Judge applies the Competition Specification to verify the room's outcome.
The word "Judge" is reserved for official Competition contexts. Outside Competition, the verifying role is either the coach (Group Session) or no one at all (Race Practice).
Organizer, when relevant
An organizer runs an official Competition. The organizer:
- Sets the Competition's parameters.
- Assigns Judges.
- Communicates the Competition Specification and any competition-specific rules.
The organizer role is Competition-tier. Outside Competition, there is no organizer role.
What the platform owns
The platform owns timing, Evaluation, Burdens, and readiness. The roles above make decisions; the platform enforces them. This separation — people decide, the platform enforces — is what makes CCB a standardized system rather than a personality-driven class.
